International Women’s day #EmbraceEquity

This website was created by and for women. In this company, women are at the center every day but on this day it can be just a little bit extra special. It seems natural to us that we as well  celebrate International Women’s Day.

But what exactly does this day stand for and what is this year’s theme?

What does international women’s day mean?

This day was first celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Back then they celebrated it on March 19; by 1913 it had changed to March 8 as we know it today.

It was created by women standing up for their rights. The goal was to improve women’s rights and mainly women’s suffrage.

In today’s society, it is celebrated by focusing on a special theme each time, such as “against violence” or “equal treatment. This year, on Wednesday  March 8, the theme is “Embrace Equity’ or in Dutch ‘Onbeperkt leefbaar’ .

How limited is our life today? Is there gender equality everywhere? Is everything distributed equally in terms of labor? Are we showing unlimited solidarity for each other and can this be improved? Time to do some (self)reflection. You can participate in this action and make your own statement: maak-je-eigen-statement

What can you do on March 8?

This day all the more women need to reach out to each other, but how can you do this? Every year several events are organized around the world. On the Dutch website internationale-vrouwendag.nl you will find an overview of all activities in the Netherlands and Belgium. Go to the tab ‘Where will you be on March 8’ and click on Belgium, after which an overview will appear with all activities for that day and the days after. Or you can also just click on this link here.

How do I celebrate?

This day is mainly celebrated with demonstrations, rallies and conferences. Is this just a little too intense for you? Then celebrate it nice and cozy at home or at a location with all your girlfriends, colleagues, female family members…. and make it a fun day, for women!

Tip:

On International Women’s Day we use specific flowers with a meaning, This fits perfectly with the message of Women’s Day; global solidarity of women among themselves.
